SAGE LGBT Elder Hotline
Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) is the world’s largest organization devoted to improving the lives of LGBT older people. For nearly forty years, SAGE has prioritized the needs of our most vulnerable LGBT elders and we continue to do so. That is why the SAGE LGBT Elder Hotline was launched with the LGBT National Help Center in 2016 as part of a national effort to take care of our own.
Now, no matter where they live, LGBT elders have a place to call when they need peer counseling, information and local resources.
Operated by the GLBT National Help Center, this hotline offers peer-support to callers who are often very isolated sometimes still closeted, and in need of a caring, non-judgmental person to talk with. The folks on the hotline don't give advice, instead they listen and they care!
Volunteers provide telephone peer-support, local resources and factual information. We ask telephone volunteers to make a minimum commitment of 2 or 2 ½ hours on the phone each week, the same time each week for at least six months after training is completed.
Volunteers must be 18 years old or older and identify as part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.
If you are selected as a volunteer, we want to stress the importance of feeling highly confident that you can honor your commitment of being available for your scheduled hotline shift (with the exception of illness or vacation). Some volunteer opportunities lend themselves to great flexibility. This is NOT the case with this type of work, since volunteers are answering a crisis hotline, and if someone doesn't show up for their shift, the phones can go unanswered. So please, give careful thought to your schedule to make sure you feel comfortable with making this commitment.
Phone volunteers will go through a training program that consists of several components.
-Completing the application and shift availability below
-Brief phone conversation and interview. This will be a chance to get to know us, and for us to get to know you. We'll be able to answer questions you may have and you will get a chance to hear samples of different types of calls we get.
-Complete an online study course
- Complete seven training shifts where you will work with an experienced phone volunteer
We realize there are many volunteering opportunities out there and we want to thank you for your interest in volunteering with us!
Please fill out the application form below and we will get in touch with you shortly.
